Single Card Readings

Single card readings are best for daily horoscopes or a quick pulse check on a particular question. They benefit from being fast and entertaining, but it’s difficult to narrow down their meanings because they aren’t interacting with any other information. Oftentimes, the energy they indicate can easily slip by unnoticed or only be evident in retrospect. For this reason, I have come to find this method useful for three purposes:
- A daily horoscope-style pointer (though I usually do 3-card draws for this).
- When I need energy check as I head into a meeting/event or out to run an errand.
- To entertain/challenge myself and explore/study the meanings of the cards.
The Steps
- Formulate the question and hold it in your mind. (YES! You always have to have a question.)
- Shuffle the cards however you want.
- Either wait for a card to pop out or stop shuffling when it feels right and take the top card.
- Drop into your “scrying mind” and see what comes up.
Single Card Practice
Doing these frequently, regularly, and consistently is a great way to deepen your relationship with your deck. Here are some suggestions:
- Pull several cards in succession and see if you can quickly say their name and meaning, like flashcards. Make it a game to discover where you have confidence and where you are uncertain.
- Whenever you are wondering about something, pull a card and see if/how it connects to what you were wondering about. Scry the card until it feels complete, then move on to step 3.
- After you’ve gotten your intuitive reading, check your encyclopedia entry (if you can.) Adjust your understanding of the card or update your entry as appropriate.
