Tidbits: He is the active principle (sulpher, fire) to the Empresses’ passive principle (salt, air). He is seated on his throne, but it was obviously hard-won requiring swift action. Plenty of battles behind him as he transitions from “conquering (T.7 The Chariot) ” to “ruling.” The situation is tenuous as his spear and shield remain at the ready.
His red cloak signifies Understanding and the maturity and capacity to provide structure, boundaries, and organization. He represents legitimate authority and the power by which the Higher Self knows what to do.
The Emperor can also very much be “The Man.” Rigid, abusive, micromanaging, tyrannical. Based on his surroundings and conditions, the authority that is so useful for establishing order can go to his head, making him a megalomaniac.

- Look at the image on the card and examine its details.
- Read the page in the companion book for that card.
- Read the description provided here.
- OPTIONAL: Read other descriptions of that card online or in other books.
- Reflect on the questions posed.
- Write down the details of the image that have meaning to you and the 2 or 3 interpretations (perhaps 1 heavenly, 1 upright earthly, and 1 reversed earthly) that resonate most strongly for you.
- Reflect on whatever correspondences you can find, such as relationships to other cards, astrological associations, and anything else. Include notes on anything specific that stands out.
