Terri O’Fallon is a thought leader in integrally-informed research of human development. Her seminal work, to date (in my opinion) is the StAGES model. From her website,

STAGES is an integrally based development model that charts human development from infancy to the highest levels of development that humans are capable of…. It is the first integrally based developmental model to incorporate quadrants, levels, states, lines and types, and it has been statistically grounded to correlate with the most widely used and researched model of adult human development, the Loevinger lineage.

The website for Stages International has a decent amount of free content to help orient you to the model and some various training programs you can elect to participate in. I’ve done The Three Questions program and found it to be well-designed. The model itself is very useful in exploring and expanding our perspectives, as well as the perspectives that are being taken by people we are interacting with. The Thee Questions program is available for $45 at the time of this post (May 2023); I have no affiliation to Stages International or Terri O’fallon.

To connect this to the Nine Action Logics, just a bit, 2.5 is the conformist, 3.0 is the expert/self-conscious stage and 3.5 is the Achiever. The rest line up fairly nicely up and down the spectrum.

Dr. O’Fallon has published a scholarly article that describes the evolution of the StAGES model as it emerges from her lineage of developmental psychology. What I love about this publication is that it is very comprehensive, though technical and dense. Meaning that for those new to the topic, you will likely find yourself pointed in quite a few directions of further research. But I believe this work does provide enough context for anyone willing to dive in to begin contemplating the StAGES way of understanding human evolution.

Enjoy the rabbit hole!
