The action/non-action that dissolves the bitterness of defeat. The recovery from being subject to violence.

Big questions.

I'm reminded of:

Verse 9. "Completion is followed by rest. This is the Way of spiritual wisdom."
Verse 11. "Benefit from what is. Make use of what isn't."
Verse 12: "Therefore let go of that and hold this, according to the inner and not the outer."
Verse 14: "Welcome what is now, and hold the Way of the moment. Knowing what led to this is called the Way's law."
Verse 15: "One who maintains the Way does not pursue fulfillment. Only through remaining unfulfilled can the concealed become revealed."
"Verse 23: "Loss embraces those who identify with it."

The common theme is that defeat at the hands of violence is only defeat if we allow it to close our eyes to the truth—the truth of the lesson in the moment, the truth of what is real and important to us, the truth that Life's unfoldment is unimpeded and continuous, the truth that harmony must be present in our lives, and that stopping to grieve and heal is part of the balance to violence.

And what about losses? Violent actions that are not victorious. Through mourning violent victories, bad taste dissipates and equanimity returns. True. Is there some action/non action that dissolves the bitterness of defeat?

Love the return to the oldest translation.
